Mohammedan win battle of prestige

An allround display by Mohammedan Sporting Club saw them to win a battle of prestige as they recorded an overwhelming eight-wicket victory over arch-rival Abahani Limited in the Dhaka Premier Division Cricket League held on Thursday at the Sher-e-Bangla National Cricket Stadium at Mirpur.

Chasing a winning target of 184 runs set by Abahani Limited, Mohammedan hardly had to sweat as they comfortable reached home making 185 in 43.5 overs with eight wickets in hand, after they cheaply dismissed Abahani Limited in a paltry total of 183.

Thanks to Shubashih for his fierce bowling display who threatened early inroad on Abahani’s strong batting line up removing first skipper Tamim Iqbal for 4 and then took Mosaddek Hossain (27) and Saqlain Sajib (0) to restrict Abahani in a small total, after they sent to bat first.

However Nazmul Hossain Shanto (42), Taskin Ahmed Abul Hasan (28) and Mosaddek Hossain (27) offered some resistance but they could not convert those into a big knock as Abahani lost wickets in regular intervals in the face of tight bowling attacks by the Mohammedan bowlers, especially Subashish Roy, who received the best player of the match award for his brilliant bowling display after the match.

Naeem Islam Jr. and Habibur Rahman joined the party as they shared two wickets conceding both 30 runs.

For Mohammedan Sri Lankan recruit Upal Tharanga led the chase from the front with an unbeaten knock of 77 off 105 balls and finished the play with Naeem Islam (25 n.o) to remain unbeaten till the end of the innings.

Opener Ezaz Ahmed was the other notable scorer for Mohammedan with 42 runs.
